Two teens jailed for drive by shooting that left two student injured

South Tower Estates, also known as Little Mexico, has seen its share of violence over the years.

It is violence Maria De La Paz told Action 4 News she has become accustomed to.

“There are a lot of things that happen here,” De La Paz said. “There are a lot of shootings.”

A recent drive by shooting that sent two teenagers to the hospital does not surprise her. De la Paz said she hear the shots, but when she walked outside it was over.

“I heard gunshots—but by the time I got outside I didn’t see anyone.”

Investigators told Action 4 News a 14 and 15-year-old, who were waiting at the neighborhood bus stop, were the targets of the shooting.

The 15-year-old was shot in the abdomen and the 14-year-old was grazed by that same bullet.

The alleged shooter---another 14-year-old boy.

"This is probably a retaliation shooting for an earlier fight between members of two different gangs,” Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino explained. “There are two gangs involved. The Po Boys and the Southsiders."

Sheriff Trevino said they have been working tirelessly in South Tower Estates to crack down on this type of gang violence and help this small community finally feel safe.

"A bus stop is the last place you think you're going to be shot,” Trevino said. “We are not going to tolerate these two gangs. We are going to hit them very hard."

The 15-year-old, who was shot in the abdomen, is in stable condition.
