A 15-year-old is behind bars after being identified as the driver in a chase and rollover accident that killed nine illegal immigrants in Palmview.

Palmview confirmed the Alton teen’s arrest late Thursday night.

Investigators told Action 4 News that they’re still trying to piece the scene together to learn more about the Tuesday night wreck.

Nine people were killed and three critically injured when the driver sped off to avoid Border Patrol agents.

The teen driver crashed off Expressway 83 closing the highway for hours.

All but one of the nine bodies has been identified.

Under Texas state law, the teen driver’s identity cannot be released because of his age.

The teen cannot face federal charges or the death penalty because of his age.
