Brownsville fire crews are investigating what caused an explosion and fire at a metal processing and recycling center early Easter morning.

Brownsville Fire Assistant Chief Victor Alfaro told Action 4 News they responded to the Jim Wilkinson Iron and Metal Inc., at about 11 p.m. on Saturday night.

At least three trucks, including a ladder truck, and 15 firefighters battled the fire for nearly two hours before extinguishing it, according to Alfaro.

Authorities said the center, located on Coolidge and 14th Streets, is a processing and recycling center for metal.

Alfaro added that the flames extended to several tankers inside the center, causing them to explode.

However, no injuries were reported and Alfaro said no homes or neighboring businesses were threatened.

Traffic along 14th Street was temporarily closed, as firefighters worked to put out the fire, but the road was re-opened by 3:00 a.m. on Sunday morning

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Alfaro said fire investigators will comb through the damage on Monday morning.
