The Brownsville Independent School District confirmed the death of 18-year-old Juvenal Torres, a senior at Rivera High School, and number 44 on the football field.

He was killed Saturday across the border, just south of the B&M International Bridge in Matamoros.

Torres' coaches told Action 4 News over the phone it happened at about 6 p.m., and they were notified an hour later.

The details of his death remain unclear, but one of the coaches said Torres was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The coach said the 18-year-old Rivera student was with a teen from another Brownsville high school, who apparently stole a car, then led Mexican police on a pursuit.

He said the teen driving lost control and crashed.

Action 4 News contacted police in Matamoros, but they were unable to confirm those details.

Soon after learning of his death, friends and classmates met up for a vigil outside Rivera High School on Saturday night.

His coaches said Torres was very respectful and hard working.

They added that he was very committed to his family, his mother and two younger siblings, and helping them move forward.

As classes resume Monday morning at Rivera High School, Drue Brown, the BISD spokesperson, said grief counselors will be on campus to help any students that may need help.

Funeral services for Torres will take place at Sunset Funeral Home in Los Fresnos, but have not been finalized.
