SPI stabbing victim undergoes surgery, suspect remains jailed

A Spring Breaker who was stabbed on a South Padre Island beach is spending Tuesday morning undergoing surgery.

The family of 21-year-old Derek Madrigal told Action 4 News that they’re asking for prayers.

The Dallas college student was visiting South Padre Island when he was stabbed by a group of suspects.

Family members said Madrigal was defending a woman being harassed or assaulted by the men on Saturday.

The case remains under investigation but so far, only one suspect has been publicly identified and charged.

Suspect Michael J. Rangel remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail under a $20,000 dollar bond for aggravated assault.

Court records show that the 33-year-old San Antonio man had a previous criminal history involving domestic violence.
