Starr County officials were placed on alert following reports of a shootout in the streets of a Mexican border city across from Roma.

It all happened in the streets of downtown Miguel Aleman around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Details were not immediately available but residents used the #MiguelAleman hashtag on the social media network Twitter to report what happened.

Residents reported hearing gunfire and grenade explosions in downtown Miguel Aleman.

The gunfire ended shortly after 3:15 p.m. Wednesday but one woman said it was enough to send her sister scrambling to hide under the bed.

No word on injuries or casualities but the incident placed American law enforcment officials on alert in Roma and Starr County.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officails told Action 4 News that Mexican authorities advised them about the incident.

The shootout took place blocks away from the Roma-Miguel Aleman International Bridge.

Customs officails said the bridge remained open in both directions throughout the incident.
