Authorities are searching for a fisherman after he went missing while swimming in a canal near Willamar.

It all happened at the North Main Drain Canal off FM 1420 on Thursday evening.

Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence told Action 4 News that a group of three men were fishing at the canal.

The men reportedly wanted to go across to the other side of the canal but decided to swim instead of walking around.

Two of the men made it but their fishing companion did not.

Sheriff Spence said authorities are searching for 19-year-old Liborio Martinez.

Authorities called off the search around midnight and resumed again on Friday morning.
