The family of slain teen Jaime Gonzalez claims they want justice, after two officers shot him Wednesday morning at Cumming Middle School in Brownsville.
“His parents just want justice,” Jaime’s godmother, Norma Navarro, said.
“We’re not trying to blame anybody, but it should have happened"
She told Action 4 News that the entire family is distraught over his tragic death and some of the things being said about him.
“He wouldn’t have killed anybody,” Navarro sobbed.
“He wouldn’t have hurt anybody. He was humble; he was a teenager.”
According to Brownsville Police, 15-year-old Jaime took a pellet gun to school on Wednesday morning and threatened school administrators.
When police officer arrived, they said Jaime pointed the gun at them and that is why they shot him.
But Navarro has another story.
“We were told that he took it away from another child that brought it into the school and Jaime was turning it in to the principal's office,” she said.
The parents spent most of the day Thursday tending to their son's funeral services at the Holy Family Church, just down the street from where Jaime grew up, in downtown Brownsville.
Father Jorge Gomez is the family's priest at the church and knew Jaime for the past year and a half, “He was a good kid. He was a caring Jaime.”
Gomez said he was shocked to hear about what happened, but now his focus is on looking after the family.
“We have a charity account,” he said.
“Whoever wants to help they can make their checks payable to Holy Family Church and we'll pay for the funeral. And what’s left, we'll give to the family.”
Jaime’s family still has many questions about what happened.
And while they want them answered, Navarro said they are also expecting something else.
“My respect to the police department, my respect to the school district, but someone has to come and apologize to them,” she concluded.
