Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño says Edinburg school district officials were not aware of hunting leases next to a school where two students were shot.

Sheriff Treviño said both students have been upgraded to stable condition following the late Monday afternoon shooting.

The two students were outdoors playing basketball at Harwell Middle School when they were shot by stray bullets from hunters on ranch next door.

The sheriff said in a press conference Monday that the school opened about five months ago.

Sheriff Treviño said Harwell Middle School is among several new schools in Hidalgo County built in rural areas and adjacent to land used for hunting.

Three men were held for questioning in the Harwell Middle School shooting but Sheriff Treviño said charges are not likely.

School officials are holding a blood drive for the two students whose names have not been released.
