MCALLEN, TEXAS (AP) -- The father of two children shot by their mother after being denied food stamps in Texas is spending time with his hospitalized son, one day after his 12-year-old daughter died.

Mary Lee Shepherd, the children's grandmother, says her son, Dale Grimmer, plans to be at 10-year-old Timothy's bedside Thursday before consulting with doctors and making a decision about whether to take him off life support.

Ramie Grimmer died late Wednesday night at a San Antonio hospital.

Authorities say Rachelle Grimmer shot her kids and then killed herself in a Laredo welfare office Monday following a seven-hour standoff with police.

The state Health and Human Services Commission said Thursday that Rachelle Grimmer didn't initially qualify for benefits because she told them she received child support that exceeded her expenses.
