An organization building homes for families in the Rio Grande Valley has changed many lives, and now they want to get another family under one of their roofs.

All they have to do is help construct it.

I spoke with one family who said they encourage anyone in need to work with Habitat for Humanity and finally get the affordable home they’ve been dreaming of.

Delia Gonzalez is making lunch for her husband Mario.

"She's always concerned about whether I need something," said Mario.

Six years ago, he was bedridden forced to depend on his wife and hospital staff to get through the day.

"It was tough times, but she didn't give up on me and that's why I thank her a lot," he said.

In 2005, Mario fell off a ladder while cleaning the windows of a home fracturing two vertebrates and breaking his wrists.

"I mean, I said, ‘what am I going to do now? How am I going to support my family?’" said Mario.

He lost the ability to move in his lower body and he can't put much pressure on his hands.

"But as time progressed I noticed I started gaining a little more mobility," said Mario.

But working in roofing and remodeling was out of the question.

Out of a job, Mario, his wife and two daughters moved into a small apartment.

"That apartment was just as big as this living room and the kitchen," he said.

As he began to rehabilitate himself, Mario learned about Habitat for Humanity and how they could help find the family affordable housing with enough room to live comfortably.

"It's been a blessing for us to get this opportunity," he said.

Qualified families can get a three bedroom, two bathroom home for as low as 385 a month including taxes.

The home eventually becomes the families when they finish paying off the total cost of the home interest free.

“It's a very good deal for them," said Habitat for Humanity’s Deb Trevino.

Habitat for Humanity is building a home in Alamo and is looking for a family to live there once it's done just in time for Christmas.

“We've got a couple that are looking real good right now," said Trevino.

To live in a home built by Habitat for Humanity, you need to have good credit, a source of income and you or family members need to give a down payment of 200 hours building the home.

The Gonzalez family said the organization has given them one more thing to be thankful for this holiday season, and they can only wish the same for someone else.
