A suspect is behind bars after a Tuesday hit-and-run accident that left two Mormon missionaries dead and a third one hospitalized.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers told Action 4 News that the two bicycling missionaries were killed on impact.

A third cyclist was rushed to Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco where he was last listed in critical condition.

Authorities said the suspect made a run for it and left his vehicle behind at the scene near Midway Road, south of Business 83.

According to DPS State Trooper Johnny Hernandez, the suspect driver turned himself in at the Progreso International Bridge on Wednesday morning.

An arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect whose name has yet to be released.

Cycling enthusiasts are already planning a memorial ride for the victims at South Padre Island  at 8 p.m. Friday.

Missionaries Identified

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, officials with the Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints identified the missionaries who were killed in the accident.

The two were identified as 21-year-old Elder Trevor Reinhold Strong of Taylorsville, Utah and 20-year-old Elder Derek Jason Walker of Fairfield, Idaho.

Church officials said 19-year-old Elder Zachary Todd Harris of Hunstville, Alabama was the one rushed to the hospital.

LDS Church Statement

Our thoughts and prayers are with Elder Harris and the family, friends and loved ones of Elder Strong and Elder Walker. We pray that the Lord will comfort and watch over them during this difficult time.
