In August of 2010, the Pothole Patrol turned to Willacy County leaders who promised street improvements were on the way for the small town of Lasara.

Fast forward to 2011, the same mangled roads are getting some much needed attention thanks to funding made available through disaster relief from Hurricane Dolly.

County leaders made the announcement in Lasara over the weekend.

Turns out Willacy County Judge John Gonzalez was aware of the problems before getting elected not only because he's from the area, but he saw our Pothole Patrol segments on Action 4 News.

"Last year I hadn't taken office and I saw that story and I could relate to it. When I was out campaigning I saw the streets and the condition they were in. I always remembered that story," said Gonzalez.

The streets the Pothole Patrol deemed the worst in the valley have been repaved and county leaders say there is more to come.

“The Pothole Patrol was the reason we started looking into these streets and because of your show we're making improvements in other parts of Willacy County as well," said Gonzalez.

County leaders say the Pothole Patrol shed light on a major problem in Lasara, that is, more than 90 percent of their streets were in very poor condition.

"I think it's very important to get the word out and be transparent, let people know certain problems in certain areas so that leaders can move in and get the correct appropriations to make those improvements," said Gonzalez.

Afterall, Gonzalez says, the squeakiest wheel gets the grease and they were squeaking in Lasara after driving through so many potholes.

"If nobody squeaks then those improvements don’t get done. As you can see today a lot of these streets have been fixed and there are more to go," said Gonzalez.
