A San Juan family of eight is homeless after a fire swept through their mobile home around 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Remnants of what used to be Costa family home are scattered across the yard.

A charred chair and door  are reminders of a home that no longer exist.

A family of eight, the youngest just five days old, are now trying to pick up the pieces after their home was completely destroyed by a fire.

Father Ricardo Costa spoke to Action 4 News about the fire.

"In about two minutes everything was gone,” he recalled.

With the help of family and friends, the Costa family got to work sifting through the debris on Friday morning.

They tore down the crisp frame of the trailer, rummaged through the debris to see if anything is salvageable.

"This love we have in family...all the people here to help us is just overwhelming,” said Elizabeth Lopez. “They're helping us with whatever we need."

San Juan Fire Department officials told Action 4 News that the fire started around 8 p.m. Thursday night.

They said by the time the first fire engine arrived, the mobile home was completely destroyed so they starting working on the homes around it trying to save what they could.

Despite losing everything, the Costa family says they have a lot to be thankful for: they survived.

"I have my newborn baby, my other children and nephew,” Lopez said. “We were inside when it happened and thank god we were able to get out safe and sound."

Fire investigators told Action 4 News that the cause of the fire is still undetermined but they're ruling out arson.

The Costa family lost everything in this fire and is need clothes, furniture, pampers and school supplies for the children.

Anyone who can help out is asked to call the family at (956) 460-8440.
