Flood after flood their pleas remained the same.
Fix drainage in Sebastian.
Keep flooding away from our homes.
“They've had so many promises here over the last couple decades,” said Willacy County Judge John Gonzales. “Yet you can see nothing has been done."
A solution is in sight.
Gonzales told Action 4 News state funding will front costs for comprehensive drainage repair.
Gonzales said drainage ditches will be dug deeper.
He said drainage pipes will be replaced with larger pipes.
“Set up correctly so water flows out,” said Gonzales.
Lydia Rocha said she’s lived in the flood prone area for forty years.
It shows.
She said every time it starts to rain hard, she leaves home.
“The first thing I do is I grab my medicines, my purse and three pairs of clothes, and I leave the house,” said Rocha.
Gonzales said soon, Rocha won't be forced to flee her home.
He said the first of the three part drainage fix will be finished in less than 60 days.
To celebrate, a restaurant in Sebastian is having a party.
Taqueria El Angel is giving away 200 plates of carne guisada starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
That's where Gonzales and other local politicians will be breaking down the drainage details.
