The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports beaches from Galveston to South Padre Island have been impacted by the current red tide outbreak.

On South Padre Island, the aerosol impact and fish kill continues.

Red tide is a high concentration of a microscopic marine algae that occurs naturally but normally in lower concentrations in the water.

In higher concentrations, it can cause the fish kill we are currently seeing.

People who are near the water during red tide may experience irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

People with existing respiratory illness, such as asthma, may experience these symptoms more severely and should avoid the area.

If people have concerns or questions about human health effects of red tide or symptoms they are experiencing, they should consult a physician.

Currently, there is no projection concerning the length of this red tide episode.
