A Reynosa couple is behind bars after they allegedly tried to smuggle more than $66,000 dollars in cash into Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Ricardo Rubio-Rodriguez and Claudia Susana Salinas-Castillo on Saturday.
The married couple were driving in their 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe and headed into Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge.
Court records released Wednesday show that law enforcement officials saw their SUV involved in suspicious activity in the Weslaco area.
Customs officers stopped them for a southbound inspection and found $66,433 dollars in cash in the car, in Salinas-Castillo’s purse and in their pockets.
The couple admitted that they were supposed to get paid between $100 to $500 dollars to pick up the cash and deliver it to a man in Mexico.
Both 34-year-old Rubio-Rodriguez and his 28-year-old wife appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Dorina Ramos in McAllen on Monday.
Investigators said both Rubio-Rodriguez and his wife are Mexican nationals who live in Reynosa.
Judge Ramos denied bond for both of them until a Thursday morning hearing.
