Joe Rodriguez was suspended for one week without pay and received six months probation for texting porn pics to a Cameron County constable's government cell phone in September.

The punishment was handed down by city commissioners following a two-hour closed door special called meeting Tuesday evening.

"Things do happen and he knows now... Not to let that happen again," Mayor Pat Patterson announced during the meeting just before he revealed the commission's decision.

The chief quickly left the meeting without commenting about his punishment.

His wife was by his side throughout closed door meeting.

It was just last week when an Action 4 News investigation exposed how the chief texted fetish porn pics of a transgendered female from his personal phone to Constable Robert Lopez.

He was placed on administrative pay with pay shortly after the story aired.

Constable Lopez from precinct 4 believed the pics were texted by the chief to try and frame him during upcoming election against each other.

He filed a police report for harassment.

Many in the community called for Rodriguez to be fired.

The chief was terminated from Rio Hondo ISD following a porn investigation on school computers as a police officer in 2007, according to documents obtained by Action 4 News.

This time he will get to keep his job.

Paul Campbell, Lyford's police chief who lives in Primera, agreed with the decision to punish the chief in some fashion.

"I think everyone has to remember police chiefs have to maintain their personal lives just as professional as their duty lives because they maintain much higher accountability for what they do," he said.

The chief's unpaid suspension begins immediately.

Officer Ryan Grayson will remain the interim chief until Chief Rodriguez returns next week, according to the mayor.
