Panhandle residents are assessing the damage after a 4.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded about an hour and a half southeast of Lubbock.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data show that the earthquake's epicenter was about 11 miles northeast of Snyder, Texas around 7:27 a.m. Sunday.

The USGS data classified the activity as light to weak.

According to the USGS website, the earthquake was felt as far away as Lubbock, Abilene, Midland and San Angelo.

Earthquakes are rare in Texas but have occured in Amarillo, Lubbock, Austin, San Antonio, Waco and the Dallas-Forth area.

Although earthquakes are extremely rare in South Texas, a 4.4-magnitude quake was recorded in Alice, Texas back in April 2010.

Action 4 News will provide new information as it becomes available.
