Mike Santos lives with his elderly parents at this home on FM 106 just outside Harlingen.

He says they got a rude awakening on Monday when they heard a loud noise and banging outside their home.

When he went to check, he was shocked to find a man trying to steal their A/C unit.

"I confronted him and asked him, can I help you,” Santos recalled.

The family’s air conditioning unit now sits damaged.

"The guy told me that somebody said he could pick this up,” Santos said. “I’m like what are you talking about. Then he just kinda freaked out and jumped in his truck and peeled out.

Santos said he had to move out of the way to avoid being hit by the man.

Santos suspects the alleged burglar may have wanted to cash in on the unit's copper.

And although the man didn’t get away with the unit-- it is now ruined and cannot be repaired.

Luckily, the family did have a second unit to keep half of the home cool.

Santos says it will cost him about $2,000 dollars to replace the A/C unit.

Anyone with information on this case, is asked to call the Cameron County Sheriff's Department at (956) 554-6700.
