A Southmost man is behind bars on animal cruelty charges after two of his seven neglected dogs died during Thursday’s 100 degree heat.

Brownsville police arrested 48-year-old Eleazar Flores, Jr. on an animal cruelty charge shortly after 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that officers were called to a home on the 2000 block of Johnson Street in the Southmost area of the city.

Police and animal control officers found two dead puppies and five badly neglected dogs.

Flores allegedly told investigators that he knew some of the dogs were sick but had not recently checked on them.

Investigators reported that Flores failed to provide the dogs with food and water despite a heat index of 106 degrees Fahrenheit.

Flores allegedly told police that he last checked on their food and water around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said none of the surviving five dogs had been vaccinated and that they were infested with fleas and ticks.

Flores appeared before a Brownsville municipal judge on Friday morning where he was issued a $3,000 dollar bond.
