A grant will help Mission police crack down on underage drinking.
They said it's an important cause that could potentially save lives.
It's a $15,000 grant on behalf of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Mission police said they will start using the funds immediately, conducting educational sessions at local schools about the legal consequences of drinking alcohol and performing undercover sting operations at establishments throughout the city.
"This is a very important grant for us because it brings education not only to the retailers that are selling alcohol to the public but at the same time to the students here at the Sharyland and Mission school districts where our officers go into the classroom setting and tell them about the laws regarding underage drinking,” said Assistant police chief Martin Garza.
The department's sting operations will include sending people under the age of 21 to purchase alcohol to see whether an employee will sell it to them.
If they do, police said arrests will be made.
