The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is reporting that former County Commissioner Sylvia Handy and nine other people have been charged in connection to a felony case.
Sheriff Lupe Treviño said over 200 hours of undercover audio tapes helped deputies put together an engaging in organized criminal activity case against Handy and the others.
Handy is currently serving a two-year and six-month federal prison sentence after being convicted of to conspiring to harbor illegal immigrants and tax evasion back in July 2010.
Sheriff Treviño said Handy will be charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, first-degree felony theft, tampering with government records and abuse of official capacity in this new state case.
Deputies arrested six out of the nine suspects this morning:
• Maria de Jesus Caudillo
• Ricardo Delgado
• Alexi Leos
• Tanya Moreno
• Beatriz Garcia
• Eloisa Uriegas
Caudillo will be charged with engaging in organized criminal activity and tampering with government records.
The other suspects will be charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, tampering with government records, engaging in organized criminal activity and theft.
Their arraignments are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The sheriffs office is still searching for three more suspects identified as:
• Doroteo Landa
• Jose Hernandez
• James Buchanan
Sheriff Treviño said deputies believe at least two of them could be in Mexico.
