A tropical formation is likely over the next 48 hours and could be headed towards the Rio Grande Valley.

The National Hurricane Center said the tropical wave near the Yucantan Channel has an 80 percent chance to develop into a tropical depression. This could occur Wednesday afternoon and possibly into a tropical storm later this week.

Thunderstorm activity associated with the wave has become better organized and radar data suggest that a circulation could be forming about 50 miles northeast of Cancun.

The storm is moving very slowly towards the west at 15 miles per hour.

Forecast models continue to track the tropical wave towards the west into the Gulf of Mexico and could be in our neck of the woods by Friday evening.

However, forecast models are not in agreement, thus not showing an exact location.

Several of the new model runs  have the wave tracking farther to the north and east.

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter Aircraft is scheduled to investigate this system this Wednesday afternoon.

At this point there is a 30 percent chance for showers and storms Friday and Saturday.
