Harlingen boy hit by car while trying to pick up piece of trash

A 9-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being hit by a car outside his Harlingen home.

It all happened in a residential area of Matz Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that the car clipped the boy and he ended up with a gash on his forehead.

Family members were visibly shaken by the incident.

They told Action 4 News the boy was with his father, who was taking out the trash.

A piece of trash flew into the street and the boy chased after it to pick it up and bring it back.

Police told Action 4 News that charges will not likely be filed against the driver.

The boy is expected to be okay but family members told Action 4 News that speeding is a problem on their street.
