The City of McAllen and the McAllen Police Officers’ Union have signed on the dotted line and now have a working contract.
It took over a year to complete and both sides said they are happy to have finally reached a decision.
McAllen ultimately wanted to take out some items that, they said, were going to cost taxpayers more money in the future.
But members of the police union said their officers deserved premium benefits---because they placed their lives on the line everyday to protect the citizens of McAllen.
In the end the city decided to reinstate those benefits they originally wanted to cut.
Something that made retired McAllen officer Harold Taylor happy.
"We're not just normal employees who are asked to do a job that most people wouldn't do,” Taylor said. “An officer handles everything from a barking dog to a gunfight and even murder."
Kevin Pagan, McAllen city attorney, said he never disputed that police officers have a tough job to do—but so do other city workers.
He said, in the end, it was about being fair and treating all city employees the same.
