A Cameron County man is behind bars following an incident where he fled from deputy constables for one mile while handcuffed.

Cameron County Precinct 4 deputy constables arrested 35-year-old Sergio Alejandro Ruiz-Alvarez just east of Rio Hondo on Thursday evening.

A deputy constable spotted a car speeding and almost causing an accident after leaving a warehouse that has been frequently targeted by burglars.

During a traffic stop, the passenger, who was later identified as Ruiz-Alvarez, appeared to be nervous.

Ruiz-Alvarez told the deputy constable that he had permission to take the merchandise in the car.

The deputy constable handcuffed Ruiz-Alvarez but the 35-year-old man took off running into a field with the handcuffs behind his back.

Cameron County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to help.

A exact motive for fleeing was not clear but deputies found Ruiz-Alvarez still handcuffed at least one mile away.

Ruiz-Alvarez appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Judge Luis Saenz on Friday morning where he was issued $2,500 dollars in bonds
