Authorities are investigation if rough brush country terrain is to blame for a single-vehicle accident that left a Border Patrol agent injured.
The accident happened late Monday evening while the agent was patrolling a rural area near Vela Jackson Avenue and Military Highway near La Joya.
Tire tracks leading into a ditch were still visible as of Tuesday morning.
Border Patrol officials said for some unknown reason, the agent veered off the road and his unit rolled over into the ditch.
Agency spokeswoman Rosie Huey said incidents like the accident sometimes happen when agents are out on patrol.
Huey said the roads aren't in the best conditions and it wouldn't take much for an accident to happen.
"Sometimes there are sink holes,” Huey said. “The terrain is very rough and our agents have to patrol in that rough terrain. Sometimes there are accidents in these situations."
Huey said the agents are trained when it comes to navigating these rough road, but at night it becomes almost impossible to see every obstacle that might stand in their way.
The Border Patrol spokeswoman emphasized that the accident as a single vehicle accident and not related to a chase or related activity.
