Normally a bakery that scored 51 demerits would easily take the cake for dirtiest kitchen, but a Weslaco restaurant took that distinction this week with 1 demerit more.

Sunrise Restaurant on 301 North Texas Boulevard scored 52 demerits on a health inspection report.

Kitchen cops found off-temperature food, a cross-contamination of vegetables and raw chicken and also rodent droppings and roaches.

The owner, Trini Leal, denied the insect and rodent contamination existed after the Food Patrol questioned the violations Wednesday afternoon.

Leal allowed the Food Patrol into the kitchen to check around.
