A San Benito man is behind bars after he allegedly crashed his car into a telephone pole during a weekend drug chase along Military Highway.

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested 43-year-old Samuel Perez on Saturday afternoon.

Border Patrol agents allegedly spotted Perez in a car near the Willacy Pump in Cameron County around 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

Perez allegedly led agents on a brief chase that ended with him crashing into a telephone poll off FM 491 and Military Highway.

Court records show that Perez fled on foot but was caught by Border Patrol agents.

Paramedics evaluated Perez at the scene and released him into custody.

Authorities found seven bundles with 528.5 pounds of marijuana inside his car.

The 43-year-old San Benito man appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Monday morning.

Court records show that Perez has a prior criminal history.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Perez until a Thursday afternoon hearing.
