For the last 20 years, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College were one school.

But on February 17th, the TSC board of trustees voted to divorce themselves from UTB, causing an uproar in the community

To help them co-exist in their divorce, Texas State Rep. Rene Oliveira (D-Brownsville) crafted House Bill 3689.

The bill would allow the two schools to continue to function independent of each other , while sharing the same location.

Oliveira was in the Rio Grande Valley on Friday  to talk to students about his new bill and how it would effect their futures.

According to Oliveira, the bill will allow  both schools to enter into any type of partnership agreement at any time in the future.

Additionally, the bill requires the institutions to establish clear guidelines regarding the transference of college class credit between UTB and TSC.

Oliveira said his message is clear, he wants two institutions that will serve the Valley while educating the future leaders of this country.

In the end, he said it'll be all up to the board members  on how they proceed with the future.
