Like many parents at Rio Hondo Intermediate School, Jaime Loya never expected news that one of the teachers would be brutally killed.

But that’s exactly what happened on Thursday night, when Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies found the body of Sonia Perez, 39, inside her Ford Astro Van.

Perez had been shot to death twice, once in the chest and once in the head.

The news left parents like Loya with the difficult task of explaining to their children what happened.

"It’s hard to explain death," he said. “Children are very inquisitive by nature.”

Loya said he’s approach will be through faith.

"I’m gonna tell them that she’s in heaven,” he added.

Loya, who has two children enrolled at the Rio Hondo Intermediate School, said he didn't know Perez personally. But he knows her family.

He said he called them up as soon as soon as he heard the news to offer them his condolences and also to pray for them.

Adivice, which he passes along to the community, to help alleviate the pain of Perez’ loss.
