A Reynosa man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley authorities discovered 13 assault rifles and ammunition hidden inside the gas tank of his truck.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 20-year-old Juan Narcizo Oyervides-Campos on federal firearms charges on Saturday.
Oyervides-Campos was driving a Ford F-150 and headed into Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge when he was stopped by Hidalgo police working southbound inspection duties.
The 20-year-old allegedly tried to flee on foot into Mexico but was quickly caught.
Authorities searched his truck and found 13 assault rifles and 27 ammunition magazines all hidden inside the truck’s secondary gas tank.
Investigators said the Reynosa man had six AR-15 style weapons, five AK-47 style weapons and another kind of assault rifles.
Court records released on Tuesday show that all the serials numbers on the assault rifles had been obliterated.
Oyervides-Campos allegedly told investigators knew the truck had weapons and got paid $200 dollars to take into Mexico.
The 20-year-old Reynosa man appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos in McAllen on Monday morning.
Judge Ramos denied bond for Oyervides-Campos until a Thursday morning hearing.
