A Brownsville man is behind bars after authorities found more than 18 pounds of cocaine hidden in an SUV he was driving.

U.S. Drug Enforcement  Administration (DEA) agents charged 31-year-old Jose Homero Guerreo in a federal drug case on Monday.

Court records show that a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state trooper pulled him over for a license plate violation off Highway 77 in Raymondville around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The trooper noted marks on the dashboard as well as inconsistent information about ownership of his SUV and Guerrero’s travel plans.

DPS state troopers turned the case over to the DEA after finding eight bundles with 18.73 pounds of cocaine hidden inside.

Guerrero appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Monday morning.

Court records show that Guerrero is an American citizen who lives in Brownsville.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Guerrero until a Thursday afternoon hearing.
