Donna officials have issued a boil water notice after a prolonged power failure at the city's water treatment facility.

City officials issued the notice on Friday afternoon.

Authorities told Action 4 News that the power failure happened on Thursday night.

The power outage was a direct result of the winter storm that has affected the entire Rio Grande Valley.

The incident caused a major drop in water pressure prompting the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to require the City of Donna to notify all customers to Boil their water prior to consumption.

To insure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking and cooking should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption.

The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for a minimum of two minutes. Ice in ice machines and ice makers should be discarded and the systems flushed.

In lieu of boiling water you may purchase bottled water.

Commercial food operators should contact the City of Donna Health Inspector Immediately at (956) 464-3314 for additional instructions on sanitation and proper food handling.

This Boil Order will remain in effect until February 5, 2011 at 12 pm

For additional information you may contact the cities Health Department at (956) 464-3314 or Office of Emergency Management at (956) 968-0367.
