A San Benito man has pleaded guilty to helping his cousin escape from a federal prison just outside Three Rivers, Texas.

David Mares appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Hayden Head in Corpus Christi on Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old San Benito man pleaded guilty to harboring an escaped prisoner.

Mares helped his 29-year-old cousin Secundino Mata, Jr. escape from a federal prison outside Three Rivers back in September.

Prosecutors told Action 4 News that Mares admitted to driving to Three Rivers to pick up his cousin.

Mares is expected to be sentenced on March 31st where he faces up to three years in prison and up to a $250,000 dollar fine.

Mata was convicted in a cocaine and money laundering case from Corpus Christi back in March 2008.

Authorities initally charged Jose Maria Mares and Sergio Mata in the case but those charges were dismissed back in November.

In the meantime, Mata remains at large.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call U. S. Marshals Service at (877) WANTED2.
