Valley residents get lotto fever for Mega Millions

Thousands are expected to play the Mega Millions lottery on Tuesday in hopes of cashing in on one of the largest jackpots in the game’s history.

The jackpot for the multi-state lottery went from $242 million to $290 million dollars after nobody won the drawing on New Year’s Eve.

Lottery officials said the jackpot jumped to $330 million dollars after even more people bought tickets on Monday morning.

Several Rio Grande Valley residents scrambled to buy their tickets on Monday in hopes of winning.

Action 4 News spokes to several people at the Town & Country 7-11 Store off North 10th Street in McAllen where many go to play the lottery

They said they are hoping to win.

The game is drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays but has now gone 15 drawings or more than seven weeks without a winner.

Mega Millions is played in 41 states and the District of Columbia.

Winners must match five numbers and a sixth "Mega Ball" to win the full amount.

Paying $1 dollar extra allows players to pick a Megaplier of 2, 3 or 4 can double, triple or quadruple their non-jackpot winnings.

The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 176 million while the odds of winning any of the Mega Millions prizes are approximately 1 in 40.
