With a sense of humor and some dancing, renowned expert Barbara Jane Paris filled the gymnasium at Saint Joseph’s Academy in Brownsville Thursday afternoon.

Paris spoke with the students and faculty about the signs of “Cyber Bullying” and how students need to speak up about the issue.

According to a recent report more than 20% of high school students nationwide say they have been a victim of “Cyber Bullying”.

Something Ms. Paris says she can’t tolerate.

She believes every child has the right to be in an environment that facilitates a passion for learning, not for a child to feel threatened.

In 2004, there was one suicide reported in Texas, another in 2007 and sadly this year alone there have been 4, all allegedly caused by “Cyber Bullying”.

Social Media sites like Facebook and Myspace have taken necessary steps, even making it easier for parents to have access to their child’s accounts.

But as Paris says “It’s like handing a 15-year-old car keys without any training and saying go have fun”.
