A small canal tucked between Harlingen and La Feria was the scene of a horrific crime 20 years ago.
Two bodies were found there and they belonged to two teenagers who had run away from a Brownsville center for troubled teens.
La Feria Police Chief Don Garcia was an officer with the department in 1990 and even though county law enforcement handled the case, the investigation made its way into La Feria.
Chief Garcia remembers a man who caused a lot of trouble in his city and was no stranger to the authorities.
He’s talking about one of the men convicted of murdering 16-year-old Ricardo Garcia of Freer, Texas and 13-year-old Ana Robles of Brownsville.
Rogelio Cannady who was only 18 years old when he stabbed Ricardo and raped and strangled Ana.
Both of their bodies were thrown in a canal off Business 83 next to the Restlawn Cemetery.
Chief Garcia says Cannady's run-ins with the law started years before then when he burglarized La Feria homes.
Officers had to be put on foot patrol just to catch him.
Cannady received two consecutive life terms for his role in the murders but has found himself on death row and hours away from execution for the fatal beating of his cellmate at a prison in Beeville.
Chief Garcia says justice will finally be served but the memory of the young people who lost their lives so many years ago will not soon be forgotten in this small valley town.
Action 4 News found an online blog apparently chronically Rogelio Cannady's years leading up to his execution.
In it, Cannady writes in his journal that he was wrongfully convicted for the murders of the teenagers.
Cannady lost his last-minute appeal and is scheduled to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Huntsville.
The execution will take place 10 days before Cannady's 38th birthday.
According to Texas Department of Criminal Justice rcords, there are 15 Rio Grande Valley natives currently on death row.
