A physician’s assistant from Edinburg and his wife are out on bond after being charged with Medicaid fraud.
Manuel Anthony Puig and his Romelia Sanchez Puig surrendered to authorities on Wednesday morning.
The couple worked at the La Hacienda Family Clinic near Alton.
A federal grand jury in McAllen indicted the couple for Medicaid fraud on Tuesday.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas said the two had filed more than 6,000 fraudulent claims worth more than $268,000 dollars between May 2005 and January 2006.
Prosecutors said 44-year-old Puig would provide services he was not authorized to do while his 41-year-old wife, a certified nursing assistant, billed the procedures.
The two appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Dorina Ramos in McAllen on Wednesday morning.
Judge Ramos ordered them released on $174,000 dollars in bonds.
The two are scheduled for arraignment on Monday morning.
The couple faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 dollars, if convicted.
