HARLINGEN -- Beginning this week, Harlingen CISD will begin to host a number of public hearings as several of the district's schools to inform the public about an upcoming bond election for $98.6 million.
Superintendent of School Dr. Steve Flores told Action 4 News, the money would be used to build new schools and make some much needed renovations throughout the district.
However, to do so, voters must approve the election set for May 8.
Taxpayers would pay half, and the district is hoping the state will put in the rest.
Some of the proposed new building would include a brand new middle school, as well as a performing arts center, an agriculture building, and an aquatic center.
Other expenses would be used to expanded existing school and renovate many others.
In addition, the district is hoping for a 9th Grade Academy, which would become a school exclusively for night graders.
"Most of the dropouts not only in the state but in the entire nation are in a critical year and that is the 9th grade," Dr. Flores said. “We want to heighten that success and we want to create the opportunity for students to be highlighted in a way that they’re not in a large campus as possible.”
Each school will have a meeting to inform their communities of the upcoming election.
