Hidalgo County Commissioner Sylvia Handy resigned from her post during a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

Handy appeared in federal court in McAllen on Monday whre she pleaded guilty to one count of fraud & false statements in her taxes and one count of conspiracy to conceal or harbor aliens.

The guilty plea got her husband Juan Gabriel Espronceda off the hook.

Court records show that Handy is expected to be sentenced before U.S. District Court Judge Ricardo Hinojosa in McAllen on June 23rd.

Handy held a press conference outside her Weslaco home at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

She read a statement saying was resigning from her post and devoting her time to her children.

Handy went back inside her house without answering questions from reporters.

Hidalgo County Judge Rene Ramirez release a statement about Handy's resignation:

"I realize the decision Commissioner Handy made today was a difficult one. Her decision to resign puts the needs of her family first and allows the Commissioners Court to move forward toward building public trust."

"Residents of Precinct 1 should rest assured that county services will continue without interruption. Furthermore, the process for selecting an interim appointment to fill the vacancy will begin. I intend to have many discussions with the members of the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court and others to ensure the next office holder carries with him or her the public's trust and will move rapidly to restore the faith of our taxpayers."
