A 50-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly drinking and then leading authorities on a wild, four-city chase that ended with a three-car wreck in Harlingen.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers arrested Lorenzo Edward Farnell on intoxication assault and evading arrest charges on Tuesday afternoon.

The 50-year-old Harlingen man first lead Weslaco police on a chase around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

It's not clear what prompted the original chase, but Farnell allegedly got away from Weslaco police in La Feria.

State troopers spotted Farnell at a gas station off Bass Boulevard and Expressway 83.

Authorities chased him around the Valle Vista Mall area but the 50-year-old man then went the wrong way down Harrison Avenue for mile.

Farnell allegedly cut over back to the expressway and wrecked into two cars after getting off at the Ed Carey Drive exit. Four people were injured in the accident.

State troopers reported that Farnell fled on foot but was caught by a Harlingen police officer.

The 50-year-old Harlingen man consented to a breathalyzer test where he was allegedly 0.118 and 0.119, well above the 0.08 legal limit for alcohol.

Farnell faces four counts of intoxication assault and one count of evading arrest.

He remains behind bars at the Cameron County Jail under $125,000 dollars in bonds.

Public records show Farnell has previous arrests for theft and authorized use of a motor vehicle in Corpus Christi.
