The search for a Merecedes veteran who allegedly shot a neighbor during an early morning disturbance ended peacefully on Tuesday afternoon.

Mercedes police said 27-year-old Oscar Garcia in custody under an aggravated assault charge.

A motive is not clear but investigators told Action 4 News that Garcia shot a neighbor twice in the back during a disturbance shortly after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Mercedes Police Capt. Eduardo Treviño said witnesses told police that Garcia ran back inside his home on the 1000 block of North Garza Street after the shooting.

Treviño said that police established a perimeter around the house and waited for the Weslaco Police Department's SWAT team for assistance.

Authorities tried to establish contact with Garcia but ultimately used a flashbang grenade and stormed the home around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday only to discover that Garcia was not inside.

Capt. Treviño told Action 4 News that investigators began interviewing family and friends of Garcia.

The investigation allegedly led police to a home on the 100 block of North Georgia Street in Mercedes.

Treviño said authorities were talking to the poeple who lived at the house when Garcia walked out of the house and surrendered without incident.

Detectives are interviewing the 27-year-old shooting suspect as well as the alleged victim, who is listed in stable condition at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

Investigators said Garcia had at least one prior arrest but details on that case were not immediately available.

Capt. Treviño said Garcia is expected to be arraigned before a municipal judge on Wednesday afternoon.
