Court records show that a Weslaco woman jailed for smuggling heroin in her car battery was on probation for a marijuana smuggling case at the time of her arrest.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Amanda Lee Gonzalez on federal drug charges Monday afternoon.
A secondary inspection allegedly revealed that Gonzalez had more than 22 pounds of heroin hidden in her truck's two car batteries.
Court records show that the 21-year-old was previously arrested at the Pharr International Bridge back for smuggling more than 107 pounds of marijuana back in in December 2004.
Court records show that Gonzalez received seven years probation on state drug charges because she was only 16 years old at the time.
Gonzalez's mother was in the car with her at the time but not charged in the failed smuggling attempt.
A criminal complaint filed in the heroin case shows that Gonzalez's name was put in a CBP lookout after her father was arrested at the Progreso International Bridge in September of this year.
Court records show that Arturo Gonzalez-Ramirez was arrested on oustanding drug warrant from a Dallas area case where he allegedly had methamphetamines hidden in his car battery.
The criminal complaint shows that CBP officers were told in the lookout that Amanda Lee Gonzalez frequently crossed the Progreso bridge and to pay attention to her car battery.
The 21-year-old woman appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Peter Ormsby on Tuesday where she was denied bond until a Friday morning hearing.
