Two Mexican men remain in custody after they tried to smuggle a group of illegal immigrants through part of the University of Texas at Brownsville campus.
U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested Julio Eduardo Ramirez-Garcia and Rolando Maldonado-Ramirez on immigrant smuggling charges on Tuesday.
A criminal complaint filed in their case shows that the two men led five illegal immigrants across the Rio Grande and then over the river levee.
The group scaled the school's fence and where in a parking lot off University Drive when they were spotted by UTB police officers.
Five of the immigrants were found in nearby brush while Border Patrol agents were able to catch Ramirez-Garcia and Maldonado-Ramirez running towards the Rio Grande.
Border Patrol agents were able to review surveillance video of the two men leading the group.
Ramirez-Garcia and Maldonado-Ramirez both appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio during a Wednesday morning hearing.
Judge Recio gave both men $75,000 cash bonds and ordered that immigrants Marcos Antonio Alberto-Navarro and Jose Santos Correa-Alberto be held as material witnesses in the case.
