Fire officials are investigating what caused a blaze that sent a toddler to the hospital in serious condition.

Fire investigators told Action 4 News a 3-year-old boy remains in serious condition Thursday evening.

Brownsville Fire Marshal, Ben Nunez, said they received the call Thursday morning regarding a fire at the Macias apartment complex on Coffee Port Road.

The babysitter told investigators she was in the next room and noticed the smell of smoke coming from the master bedroom.

She told firefighters when she opened the door, smoke rushed out.

The babysitter managed to remove a 2-year-old girl from the room.

She tried to go back inside to rescue the little boy, but the flames were too intense.

A neighbor told Action 4 News he heard distress screams.  "They were yelling, ‘The baby!  The baby!  We can’t get him out.’  That’s when we tried to get in and get the little boy out, but the smoke didn’t let us.  So, we kept trying, but we couldn’t get in until the fire department got here,” Eduardo Zamarripa said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the boy and pulled him to safety.

It is believed the child suffered smoke inhalation.

Fire Marshal Nunez said he is not sure what caused the blaze, but investigators will return to the apartment Friday morning to search for clues.

The apartment where the children lived was completely damaged.

Two other units also sustained fire and water damage.

All three units remain evacuated at this time.
