A 19-year-old man escaped the death penalty but got life in prison for the murder of a McAllen war veteran.

Miguel Elias Gomez was the first of seven suspects accused of breaking into 76 year old Miguel Cahue's mobile home back in August 2008.

The group robbed and beat Korean War Veteran to death in order to steal a DVD player and other items.

Gomez escaped capital murder charges but a Hidalgo County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder.

The jury sentenced him to life in prison Friday afternoon.
