The economic turmoil has hit one of the Rio Grande Valley's largest hospitals.

Dozens of employees at Valley Baptist Medical Center have been laid off.

The 64 cuts include top management and staffers not connected to direct patient care.

VBMC President and CEO James Eastham said several things led to the cutbacks including the multi-million dollars worth of damage left behind by Hurricane Dolly, the increased cost of borrowing and the lack of financing.

Eastham said the cutbacks were unavoidable in order for the health system to stay financially strong.
