EDINBURG, TEXAS -- This week, Dr. Francisco Cigarroa will make his first visit to the Rio Grande Valley as Chancellor of the UT System.

On Friday, he will meet privately with University of Texas Pan-American officials, faculty, students and Edinburg community leaders.

The UT System Regents appointed the Laredo native in January.

One of Chancellor Cigarroa's agenda items will be how and when to reopen the Cervical Dysplasia and Cancer Stop Clinic in McAllen, which closed in December.

"I've been speaking to Chancellor Cigarroa and Dr. Shine, and that clinic will be back on track as soon as possible," said District 20 Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa.  "We are working on the funding as we speak."

Sen. Hinojosa also said he is talking to Texas Tech University officials about developing a medical school in the Valley.
